Roof of church in Mexico collapses, killing 11

At least 11 people were killed and two others seriously injured Sunday after the roof of a church collapsed in northern Mexico, officials said.

Preliminary reports indicate that approximately 100 people were inside the Ciudad Madero building at the time of the incident, according to a statement from the Tamaulipas state security services. Thirty people were believed to be buried under the rubble, Reuters reported.

At least 60 people were injured, two of them seriously, Tamaulipas security spokesman said.

Units from the National Guard, National Guard, Civil Protection and Red Cross participated in the rescue operation.

Bishop José Armando Alvarez of the Tampico diocese said the roof of the church collapsed while worshipers were taking communion, Reuters reported. I urged others in the community to pray for the survivors.

“Right now, the necessary work is underway to extract the people who are still under the rubble,” Archbishop Armando said in a recorded message shared on social media, according to Reuters.
